About Our Level 2 Award for Door Supervisors in the Private Security Industry Top Up

People who want to renew their SIA Door Supervisors License must take the Level 2 Award for "Upskilling a Door Supervisor Working in the Private Security Industry." The Security Industry Authority (SIA) has made the upskilling door supervisor course a requirement for anyone who wants to renew their licence as a door supervisor.

Door Supervisors who want to renew their licences must take a mandatory refresher course from the SIA. This can be done by taking a "top up" course. After taking the SIA refresher course, learners who qualify will be able to ask SIA to renew their licence.

In order to work in the private security sector, you must have a SIA licence. Find out how to get your door supervisor or security guard licence so you may operate lawfully.

How long does it take to get an SIA Licence?

Although there is no standard time frame, the SIA advises that it may take up to 25 working days to obtain your SIA licence. It could take up to 6 weeks or even more in the rare instances where problems with identity verification or inquiries about criminal histories arise. A choice will be made on whether or not to provide a licence during this period. You will receive a licence that is good for three years after the SIA writes to you to explain their decision.

WARNING: The Security Industry Authority-accredited training and credentials are a legal requirement for everyone working in the security industry in the United Kingdom. It is illegal to practise in the sector without a current SIA Licence; as a result, you risk being fined or imprisoned.

Factors that can affect how long the application process takes are:

  • Whether you have the right to work in the UK
  • An incomplete address history
  • Criminal record checks
  • If you have spent any time outside of the UK
